Founded in 1994, NAID established the only comprehensive certification program for document destruction companies in North America. In 2019, NAID merged with PRISM International to form i-SIGMA (International Secure Information Governance & Management Association), which now administers the NAID AAA Certification program.

The AAA designation represents the highest level of certification available to a document destruction company. It is not a membership badge or a self-reported qualification. NAID AAA Certification is earned through rigorous, independent auditing that verifies every aspect of a company's security practices, from employee screening to the physical destruction process.
